Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Overview

Live an unforgettable experience with a 4 km hike to the majestic 7 Colors Mountain, known as Vinicunca, located in the district of Pitumarca, province of Canchis, in the Cusco region. This impressive natural destination, famous for its vibrant hues, is one of Peru’s most emblematic landscapes.

The mountain is part of the imposing Ausangate, the fifth highest peak in the country at 6,384 meters above sea level, considered in the Andean cosmovision as the “Apu” or protective spirit. Ausangate has been revered for centuries as the guardian of the Andean people. From the Vinicunca viewpoint, you can admire not only the unique colors of the mountain (a result of the mineral composition of the terrain) but also spectacular views of the glaciers, the open sky and the high Andean landscapes that surround this sacred place.

Itinerary

Day 1
Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Starting point

Pick up from your hotel at 04:00 am (if the hotel is near the main square of Cusco, otherwise we will coordinate a meeting point).

Language of the guide

  • Spanish or English.
  • Start: 04:30 am.

We will leave early in the morning from Cusco, on a road trip of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to the district of Pitumarca, where we will recharge our batteries with a nutritious buffet breakfast, ideal for the hike that awaits us.

After breakfast, we will continue by transport to Qayrawiri, the starting point of the trek. Here, if you wish, you will be able to rent horses directly from the local people, thus supporting the economy of the community.

The hike to Vinicunca will take between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the pace of the group. Along the way, we will enjoy spectacular Andean landscapes: crystal clear streams, majestic mountains, small lakes, snow-capped mountains and a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna.

Arriving at the expected viewpoint of the 7-color mountain (Vinicunca), located at 5,029 meters above sea level, we will have enough time to rest, take pictures and admire this unique natural phenomenon. From this point we will also be able to contemplate the grandeur of the Apu Ausangate, the most sacred snow-capped mountain in the Andean cosmovision.

After the visit, we will start the descent to the restaurant, where a buffet lunch with local products awaits us.

Finally, we will return to Cusco, with an estimated arrival between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm.
